Science & Technology Week June 2016

Year 6

Year 6 have really enjoyed their Science and Design Technology topic this week: Generating Electricity.  On Monday we revised the symbols of each component, as well as using the components to make different types of circuits.  We have loved having all the Science equipment out!  On Tuesday we looked at renewable and non-renewable energy, where we wrote a balanced argument looking at the positives and negatives aspects of wind turbines!  For the Design Technology we have made a model windmill, that uses wind to generate electricity, which then moves the bucket up and down.  We then looked at improving our designs and carried out experiments where we changed one variable to ensure it was a fair test.  On Thursday we met Ray and Nicola from EDF Energy at Hartlepool Power Station, where they explained how the power station generates enough electricity for 2 million homes!  We also took part in a fun quiz J. On Friday we researched Benjamin Franklin using ICT to help us write a biography of his life.  We also looked at making different types of switches in pairs, this was quite challenging!

Year 4

During Science and Design Technology week we have been looking at healthy living; food and exercise. We have researched, designed and made some trainers that would be suitable for Olympic runners and took part in a fitness boot camp and workshop with a visitor. The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
